The mother of a murdered 18-year-old who appeared in court Wednesday wearing a T-shirt depicting her daughter’s mutilated body explained why she did it.
“It was painful to show these photos, but I had no choice,” says Alessandra Verni, who has been seeking justice for her daughter for five years.
Convicted murderer Innocent Oseghale has appeared to deny further allegations that he sexually assaulted Pamela Mastropietro before killing her. A successful appeal is likely to reduce the life sentence.
Verni has been fighting the legal system since 2018 as delays and appeals prevented her from ending up after her daughter was dismembered and then killed by Oseghale.
The mother said she “couldn’t take it anymore” and “exploded” with anger after a hearing was postponed again until February 22, and had the T-shirt printed to boldly confront Oseghale in court.
“I go to sleep every night and dream about Pamela,” she told La Stampa. “That’s why I showed you this picture.”

Mother Alessandra Verni said: “After five years I am losing faith in justice. I wanted to give a wake-up call.
“I wonder what is the point of re-prosecuting Oseghale, challenging sexual assault and opening up the possibility of a reduced sentence.
“Didn’t he use enough violence to deserve a life sentence?”
Earlier this week, Mastropietro’s mother appeared before the Court of Appeal in Perugia wearing a T-shirt displaying the gruesome images of her daughter’s body.
The photos on the shirt have not yet been shared with the public.
La Stampa reported that these are autopsy photos taken by forensics.
Ms Verni told the Italian outlet: “Anyone who saw these images knew their conscience would be shaken if they were released.”
She said the courts must now uphold a life sentence for the man who was found guilty of the “murder and defamation” of Pamela Mastropietro last year.

Verni is still seeking justice five years after her daughter’s death.
In 2019, after a hearing, she said an expedited trial would be fine as long as “the whole truth comes out.”
“Because it wasn’t just him,” she said, referring to Oseghale.
Four years later, Verni called in accomplices.
She told La Stampa: “The day he killed Pamela, there were other people with Osenghale […] I have the feeling that no one is being investigated. No one is looking for these men.”
In another interview, the distraught mother said: “No one is looking for the accomplices of the murderer.
“I always have my daughter’s friends by my side in my fight for justice. Watching her grow up is like watching her grow up.’

The t-shirt worn on Wednesday showed Mastropietro’s severed head. The sequence of disturbing images is also designed so that the individual body parts form the structure of a body.
Oseghale (32) was found guilty in 2019 of the murder of 18-year-old Mastropietro and sentenced to prison. He is appealing part of his rape conviction.
The judge asked Oseghale if he planned to attend the next hearing in February. After speaking with his lawyer, he told the court he would not do so.
Verni, who was in the courtroom at the time in a T-shirt, shouted loudly: “Now even an executioner is asked whether he wants to attend the trial or not.
“Let’s roll out a red carpet here too,” she added.
Both were removed from the courtroom by the police after a collision.
Oseghale’s life sentence is likely to be reduced if the appeals court finds him not guilty of the rape.

Mastropietro was killed after leaving an addiction center in Macerata, in the Marche region, in early 2018.
Investigators understood she decided to leave the facility and walked to the local train station.
After leaving the rehabilitation center, Mastropietro tried to find drugs in Macerata. Then she met Oseghale, a local drug dealer, then 29 years old.
A day later, a passer-by saw two abandoned suitcases lying in a ditch. Mastropietro’s mutilated and broken body was found in the trunk.
Drug dealer Oseghale was accused of selling Mastropietro drugs before arresting, raping and stabbing her.
In 2019, courts heard that Mastropietro was alive when Oseghale “tried to tear them apart”.
The police found Mastropietro’s bloody clothes at Oseghale’s house.
Oseghale claimed in his testimony that Mastropietro died of an overdose of heroin.
However, an autopsy revealed that she died as a result of multiple stab wounds to her stomach. It was also established that her body was butchered while she was alive.
Oseghale was charged with murder, assault, concealment and the destruction of a corpse. He denied the allegations in court in February 2019.
He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment with eighteen months in solitary confinement.
