Carl Goodman retires after 34 years at the NY institution as Executive Director of the Museum of the Moving Image

Carl Goodman is leaving the Museum of the Moving Image, the New York cultural institution where he worked for 34 years, most recently as executive director.

Goodman will step down from his position on March 3 and will then assume the role of President and CEO of the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. The MoMI Board of Trustees, led by co-chairs Ivan Lustig and Michael Barker, formed a committee to begin the search for his successor.

Goodman joined the museum as an associate professor in 1989 and held positions including digital media curator and senior associate director before being named executive director in 2011. His 12-year tenure in that capacity saw the museum’s annual attendance triple after a major expansion and renovation. MoMi also secured millions in government and private funding for investment projects under his leadership. Recently, with the support of New York State Senate Vice President Michael Gianaris, $5 million in state funding was secured to further his education in film, television and digital media.

Goodman initiated multi-year, multi-million dollar privately funded new initiatives, including Marvels of Media dedicated to increasing the representation of professional media on the autism spectrum, and also oversaw the acquisition of a large collection of Jim ‘s dolls and other material by the Hensons Family Museum. This was followed by the establishment of a new permanent gallery and exhibition dedicated to Henson’s work, as well as the development of a touring version of the exhibition which continues to tour the country.

Also notable was the fact that Goodman guided the museum through the pandemic period as it adapted to fulfill its mission in an online virtual environment from March 2020 to April 2021. The museum worked with the New York Hall of Science and Rooftop Films to direct the 200-car Queens Drive-In in Elmhurst, Queens, as well as major exhibits such as the one commissioned by AMC Networks. crazy men and The living dead.

Additionally, from 2016 to 2017, Goodman served as president of the New York City Cultural Institutions Group, a coalition of 31 cultural organizations all housed in buildings owned by the City of New York.

The Museum of the Moving Image, located in Queens, aims to promote the understanding, enjoyment and appreciation of the art, history, engineering and technology of film, television and digital media. There are exhibitions throughout the year; performances of important works; Talk shows with actors, directors, artisans and business leaders; and educational programs that serve more than 70,000 students each year and also boast a substantial collection of moving images.
