The Justice Department and a group of states have filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, alleging that the Internet giant used its “stranglehold” on digital tools to eliminate threats to its dominance in the advertising market.
Attorney General Merrick Garland and antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter plan to officially announce the lawsuit at a news conference on Tuesday.
In the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Virginia, the Justice Department said Google’s plan was “simple but effective: (1) neutralize or eliminate actual or potential ad technology competitors through a series of acquisitions; and (2) exercising its dominance in the digital advertising markets to force more publishers and advertisers to use its products while disrupting their ability to effectively use competing products.
