The bag is no longer just an accessory. A status symbol is a sign of good taste and a worthwhile investment. Some models are more expensive than an apartment in the Moscow region and do not lose their relevance for many years. They not only convey the main trends of the eras, but also literally embody them.
Everyone remembers the extraordinary popularity of Chanel 2.55 bags, Gucci Jackie 1961 and Hermès Kelly. By the way, the last two models are named after the style icons of the 20th century – Jacqueline Kennedy and Grace Kelly. And it’s not uncommon for designers to rename their bags in honor of their unspoken ambassador. You probably remember Lady Dior (an allusion to Princess Diana) and Hermès Birkin, created specifically for Jane Birkin.
However, history does not stand still and the list of bags is growing every year. In the late 1990s, every urban fashionista dreamed of the Fendi Baguette, in the early 2000s the entire fashion community was obsessed with the Balenciaga Motorcycle, in the 2010s the world saw the creation of the Phoebe Philo Celine Luggage. And then came the age of social networks, and the desire to get a fashionable bag began to increase exponentially.

One of the most popular models of the last decade was the Jacquemus Le Chiquito bag. And its author, Simon Port Jacquemus, has a birthday today. Last year we celebrated our beloved designer with a material on seven finds, and this year we decided to round up 25 of the most popular bags in fashion history.

With sac à dépêches (the original name of the bag), Grace Kelly made her debut in the 1954 film To Catch a Thief (thanks again to Alfred Hitchcock). They say that the actress liked the bag so much that she began to walk with it everywhere. And after the photos with her appeared in the press, all fashionistas began to buy an accessory she. Although sac à dépêches was officially renamed Hermès Kelly only in 1977, it has been referred to as the Kelly bag since the 50s behind the scenes.

Mademoiselle Chanel has been a major innovator in the fashion world and has always voted for comfort. She suggested that the girls wear trousers, shorten their dresses, and get rid of the corset at first. And in February 1955, she released a bag with a chain that could be slung over her shoulder. The model was named 2.55 and immediately became the object of desire for millions of fashionistas.

If you thought this bag only appeared in 2020, we’re in a hurry to upset you. Alessandro Michele worked with the brand’s rich heritage and introduced a new version of the Gucci Jackie 1961, originally made famous (and named) by US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

The story of how Hermès Birkin came about is known to everyone who is not indifferent to fashion. In the early 1980s, Jane Birkin was on a plane with the president of an Italian company and complained that she couldn’t find a bag that would fit all she needed. Jean-Louis Dumas heard about the singer and a month later invited him to the Hermès office, where he was asked to choose a sketch and details for his bag. As they say, the rest is history.

In the late 1980s, backpacks took over the fashion industry. Miuccia Prada was one of the first to introduce the nylon version. A practical model with multiple pockets and a triangular logo, it was so admired by fashionistas of the time that it became one of the top-rated it-bags of the 1980s.

But the popularity of this Dior model is due to Princess Diana, who walked the bag so often and became associated with it. Not long after, the French brand decided to change its name – Chouchou thus transformed into Lady Dior.

If you’ve watched Sex and the City, you probably remember the scene where Carrie Bradshaw desperately tries to prove to the thief that her purse is not just a purse but a baguette. Thus began the first wave of popularity of the Fendi Baguette model. And by the way, so far it has not passed. Last September, the bag celebrated its 25th anniversary and Kim Jones organized a fashion show where this model of the Italian brand was the main accessory of all models.

This bag first appeared in the Versace collection in 1994 when Kate Moss, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell walked proudly down the runway. A few years later, the model with the needle-shaped handle was named one of the most recognizable bags in fashion history.

Another bag that has topped the trend podium twice. First in the 2000s, then in 2018. In 1999, John Galliano presented Dior Saddle in the spring-summer show. Later, the cowboy models walked the runway in satin dresses and jeans, high boots and shiny bandages, each with a bag with CDs in gold lettering. Meanwhile, in the third season of Sex and the City, this model was again walked by Carrie.

But 2001 took place under the auspices of the Balenciaga Motorcycle bag. It was in the collection of all it-girls of the 2000s: from the Olsen sisters to Nicole Richie.

You can tell from just one photo of this Louis Vuitton bag that it was popular in the heyday of the 2000s. Thanks to Paris Hilton and her followers.

In 2004 Phoebe Philo was the creative director of the Chloé brand, under her leadership the Paddington bag was launched. Immediately after the show, glossy publications reported that this model was the fastest-selling bag in history. All 8,000 pieces never made it to Chloé boutiques as they were pre-ordered.

Of course, in terms of popularity, this Fendi bag cannot compete with its predecessor. However, the creation of Silvia Venturini-Fendi has earned a place in the world rankings of it-bags, due to the love of stars and influencers.

Today the Prada Galleria is considered a timeless classic, but in 2007 this model was one of the most coveted bags. And the model’s name refers to the Victor Emmanuel II Gallery, where the Prada boutique first opened. By the way, fashionistas loved the bag so much that it was rethought several times for new collections.

2008 marked the beginning of the Phoebe Philo era at Céline. Over the course of 10 years, he has succeeded in making the French brand great again and has created many of the things that mark it. One of them was the Céline Luggage bag, whose waiting list was scheduled several months in advance.

Chanel Boy is one of the most imitated in the world. In 2013, it won the hearts of not only the fashion industry, but also Chinese manufacturers. And such interest arises only from the excitement of the first. In the early 2010s, it seems that all the celebrities have this bag.

But in 2014 all fashionistas started looking for a small Valentino Rockstud bag. Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Nicola Peltz had a model with gold nails on their chains.

From 2005 to 2017, Riccardo Tisci was Creative Director of Givenchy. Thanks to his work, the brand started to make a profit again and pieces from the collections became objects of desire. One of them is the Givenchy Lucrezia bag, which was fully redeemed in less than six months.

Simon Port Jacquemus knows exactly what girls want. The Le Chiquito bag was one of the designer’s first and most important inventions. In terms of popularity, it can easily be compared with the cult models of Chanel or Louis Vuitton. Meanwhile, it was Le Chiquito that took the brand to a new level and brought Simon worldwide fame.

The title of the main bag of 2019 rightfully belongs to Bottega Veneta Kese. Back then, we saw Daniel Lee’s it-bag (colloquially referred to as the “dumpling”) wherever we could find it: from social networks to the streets of megacities.

In 2020, the fashion world began to dive towards zero. That’s when the Prada Re Edition plastic bags exploded – Miuccia Prada rethought the 2005 version and didn’t lose it. Just everyone dreamed of the “baby” Prada.

Prada is never too much! A year later, Miuccia launched a more “adult-friendly” bag called the Cleo. And hit the target board again. The bag was first approved by influencers, and then by all people who are not indifferent to fashion.

It is impossible to talk about 2022 without talking about Balenciaga. For 12 months we discussed the ‘garbage bag’, then the ‘Lay’s chips’ and then the scandal with the ad campaign. The title of the main bag of the year also goes to Balenciaga – this time the Le Cagole model advertised by Kim Kardashian.
