Joan Jett & The Blackhearts – Crimson and Clover
In 1982, the imperial Joan Jett resumed the sweet and bewitching Crimson and clover by Tommy James & The Shondells and makes it irresistibly sexy and languid.
We like it, in part because she didn’t even bother changing the pronouns.
Sonic Youth – Superstars
On the Carpenters tribute album, I ask for the masterful cover of Super star by Sonic Youth, which with Thurston Moore’s voice becomes dark and disturbing.
Oasis – I am the walrus
A six minute song, with a convoluted structure and meaning nothing… and taken from Oasis. Not bad right? And if it’s a great live performance at a time when brothers Liam and Noel weren’t tearing their eyes out (well, not always), that’s even better.
So you’ll tell me nobody beats the Beatles. Perhaps. But when your name is Gallagher, you can afford all the bragging. Goo-goo-goo-joob!
The White Stripes – I just don’t know what to do with myself
Dusty Springfield’s classic is revived under the leadership of the White Stripes guitar-drum duo, served by the lap dance hypnotic of a certain Kate Moss, why not.
It doesn’t top Cameron Diaz’s falsetto voice in the cult romantic comedy My best friend’s Weddingbut almost.
Johnny Cash – Wounded
Johnny Cash’s farewell song, this one to offend tear the heart apart. It’s simple, it’s like this Twilight song by Nine Inch Nails was written just for him.
Karen O, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – Immigrant song
At the opening of the film The girl with the dragon tattooadaptation of the first part of the saga Millennium by David Fincher, this cover of the electrifying Karen O and her shrill vocals does more than honor the original Led Zeppelin. Yes yes, dare I say it: it tops it.
The distillers – Ask the angels
From her first album, Brody Dalle and her band cover the punkest of poetess, Patti Smith and bring us a gritty, raw version of this 70s cult song.
AURORA – Rasputin
Evanescent Norwegian singer Aurora covers and twists Boney M’s indescribable disco hit. And I swear, you can still dance.
Kaleida – 99 Luft balloons
Notice to Germanophiles and telephones, we know each other, we are the first to get up in the evening to go wild on Nena’s 99 balls.
This time we’re going to roll into a ball with this melancholy cover.
Daði Freyr – Arcade
Do you remember Daði Freyr, the extravagant representative of Iceland at Eurovision in 2021? His covers of all kinds available on Youtube are often small masterpieces, starting with that of the Dutch Eurovision winner in 2019, Arcade.
Sorry, Duncan, but those 12 points go to Iceland this time around!
It is for you ? What is the recovery that surpasses them all?
