For some years theCBD is omnipresent. We lend it calming and soothing properties for the body but is also praised for its benefits on the skin. Such popularity that cosmetic brands have been quick to integrate this sulfurous ingredient into their various formulas!
Facial cleanser, serum, moisturizer, lotion, oil… CBD is the new active ingredient. But does it really deserve all the hype, or is it just another fad to sell beauty products to those who love to try everything?
This is the question we asked Sophie Strobel, biologist and cosmetologist. And here are her answers.
CBD, what is it?
CBD is an abbreviation of the term “cannabidiol”. This is a compound found in cannabis (along with 200 others). That’s why she suffers from a bad image and why the ban on him varies from country to country.
Nevertheless, CBD does not contain THC, the psychotropic molecule banned in France. The Court of Justice of the European Union also ruled, on November 19, 2020, that “CBD cannot be considered a narcotic”.
A concept that can reassure more than one about its use in cosmetics.
What are its main virtues?
CBD is known for treat all microinflammations which can interact in the well-being of the skin. This is one of its main qualities. Sophie Strobel explains to Madmoizelle that this resource can be considered real anti stress for the skin :
“CBD acts on the different sources of micro-inflammation that can be observed on the skin. These can be linked to tobacco consumption, stress, UV rays… It also reduces the reactivity threshold of the epidermis in the face of all these inflammations which weaken it. »

Who is CBD for?
It’s quite surprising, but the CBD it is recommended for all skin types. It is one of those multidisciplinary resources that can be trusted for several reasons. The specialist explains:
“Because it is an antioxidant, it will be able to trap free radicals and prevent them from wreaking havoc on the skin. This power is therefore good for everyone.
Its anti-inflammatory qualities will be beneficial for people suffering from inflammatory skin problems like acne, sensitive skin, dark spots due to UV rays or inflammation on dull or dark skin, etc.
And even on skins that don’t present particular problems, this active ingredient will effectively fight skin aging. So yes, it really is for everyone. »
Is it really worth all the fuss?
The answer is yes ! Beyond its sulfur aspect, CBD contains real benefits and its action is much more advanced than we think.
“We’re not just on a trend like coal or others that are interesting, but ultimately more marketing. Sure, the industry sails CBD on a sulfur idea, but there’s a reality behind it: It really is a super cool ingredient.
Just as there is an endocrine system, there is too a central endocannabinoid system. The latter has retrograde neurotransmitters based on endogenous lipids that bind to cannabinoid receptors.
CBD is therefore a molecule that is recognized by the cell itself and which acts directly (at low doses) on the skin. It has super strong anti-inflammatory effects, it’s also an antioxidant and still, we’re only at the beginning of the studies. »
CBD Cosmetics VS CBD Oil
While many people tend to want to use pure CBD oil and incorporate it into their skin routine, Sophie Strobel recommends using cosmetics instead. whose level of active ingredient is already pre-dosed by the brand.
The reason ? It doesn’t make sense to put too much in it as it’s already a very potent ingredient, but also because one can tend to use too much in trying to get quick results! A gesture that can hurt the skin.
For Sophie Strobel, it’s best to trust brands that know exactly what dosage to use to make their product active without being dangerous. Now you know.
