Hello, are you sleeping? Last night, the Golden Globes announced its winners, who received special attention from year to year – it’s not for nothing that the award has been dubbed the Oscar rehearsal. Thus, the winner in the key category – “Best Dramatic Feature” – was Steven Spielberg’s “Fabelmans”, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and won the Audience Award.
The story takes place in New Jersey in the early 1950s. Seeing a train wreck on screen for the first time in his life in a movie theater, little Sammy Fabelman was so moved that he nearly broke an expensive toy railroad while trying to recreate the accident. For therapeutic purposes, the mother offers the child to shoot a toy disaster with an 8mm camera. So the childhood hobby of shooting silly domestic scenes turns into a lifelong love and passion for a young hero: film directing. Overall, this story is of course largely autobiographical and based on Steven Spielberg’s memories of his childhood in Arizona and California.

The main roles in the project were played by Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and Seth Rogen.
Meanwhile, according to the author of Fabelmans, he and one of the screenwriters, Tony Kushner, discussed the idea for the movie for many years, but only started writing the script in 2020, at the height of the pandemic. Steven Spielberg had free time. And during filming, the director gave the actors access to their family archives so they could more accurately portray their prototypes. In addition, the scenes in which the main character shoots on 8 mm film are recreated from tapes Steven Spielberg shot as a child. Will a trip to the childhood of one of the main directors of the Oscars be worthwhile today? We’ll see.
