Fans at the Australian Open are being warned they will be TURNED OFF if they draw too much Novak Djokovic – but Stan Wawrinka says the open season should be for players

Fans at next week’s Australian Open have been warned they will be kicked out if they abuse nine-time champion Novak Djokovic.

As the 35-year-old Serbian continued to try to win hearts and minds ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season, tournament director Craig Tiley issued an ultimatum.

“If they interrupt someone else’s fun, boom, they’re out.” We don’t want them there. You can stay away or we’ll throw you out,” he told the Herald Sun.

Djokovic, who was arrested last year for entering the country without a Covid vaccination, is targeting a 10th Australian Open singles title in Melbourne and will not be able to play until his three-year visa ban is lifted.

Djokovic still maintains that he was harshly treated last year when he was finally deported because he was not vaccinated against Covid.

“All of a sudden I became the bad guy in the world, which was obviously a horrible position for an athlete to be in,” he said.

Speaking to Channel Nine, he called for fair treatment by the public, which certainly seemed to be the case in Adelaide last week. He can also count on the large population of Serbian origin in the Victorian capital over the next two weeks.

The 21-time Grand Slam winner said he feared he would face hostility while playing, but Tiley confirmed fans inappropriately sledding Djokovic would be kicked out (Djokovic will be deported in 2022).

Melbourne’s first test comes when he plays a public exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios at the Open’s venue. It is referred to as a gathering of “enemies” after their recent reconciliation.

“I came with all valid papers,” he added, referring to the events of 2022. “I really hope the public will take me well. I can’t predict it.

“Of course I wish for a positive reception, but it is in their hands. I hold no grudges. I’m certainly not against people in Australia. I think being here shows how much I really want to be here and how much I want to play.’

Andy Murray said he has no timeline for retirement plans after winning an exhibition match yesterday when he defeated China’s Zhang Zhizen 2-6 6-3 10-2.

“If my body is in good shape and I can keep up consistently, I will keep playing,” said the two-time Wimbledon winner. “But I can’t see that far at my age. with and with the problems I had. If I had a major injury, I probably wouldn’t try to get rid of it.

The draw for the Australian Open was due to take place in the early hours of this morning (4am UK). Two British women were to compete in the finals of the qualifying tournament overnight, Jodie Burrage and Lily Miyazaki.
