CBS News 60 minuteswho provided the first interview with Prince Harry in connection with the publication of his memoirs, has released an extract from his interview with Anderson Cooper, including an admission that he was “probably bigoted” before his relationship with Meghan Markle, now his woman.
In the clip of the interview, which was broadcast in full on Sunday, Harry says he was “incredibly naive” about how his relationship with Markle would be treated by British tabloids.
“What Meghan went through was partly similar to what Kate and Camilla went through, very different circumstances,” Harry said. “But then you add the race element, the press, the British press, jumped on it immediately. I was incredibly naive about it. I had no idea the British press was so big. Hell, I was probably grown before I dated Meghan.
Cooper went on to ask Harry, “Do you think you were bigoted before you dated Meghan?”
“I don’t know,” said Harry. “If I talk like that, I didn’t see what I see now.”
Harry also interviewed Michael Strahan Good morning Americaaired Monday, followed by a half-hour special that night for ABC News Live and Hulu.
Harry’s memoirs Reservations will be published on Tuesday.
In the clip, Harry suggested he was trying to keep the breakup out of the public eye, but “every time I tried to do it privately, there were briefings and leaks and stories planted against me and my wife. You know, the family motto is never complain, never explain, but it’s just a motto.”
He added: “You will eat or chat with the correspondent. And this correspondent is literally fed information and writes the story. And at the very bottom they will say that they have reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. But the whole story is commentary from Buckingham Palace. So if we’ve been told for the last six years, “We can’t make a statement to protect you”… But you do it for other family members. It will – there comes a point where silence is betrayal.”
