California Rep participates in historic vote, child in pouch

California Democrat Jimmy Gomez caused a stir when he arrived in the House of Representatives with his four-month-old son in a baby carrier. The politician was especially keen for his little boy to participate in Hakeem Jeffries’ historic vote and took the opportunity to send a message: men can also take care of their children despite the demanding job.

On Tuesday, January 3, the US House of Representatives elected its presidents. California Democrat Jimmy Gomez had invited his family to attend his swearing-in and visit the Capitol for the occasion. Republican representatives failed to choose their president, the session dragged on and Jimmy Gomez had to revise his family plans. However, he has decided to keep his four-month-old son, Hodge, with him.

The child was thus able to witness the election of Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, the first black man to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. For Jimmy Gomez, who is of Mexican immigrants, the presence of his son in the South Wing of the Capitol had a very special meaning that day.

A beautiful symbol is already not bad even if it is too small

The adorable photo featuring the rep and his son went around the world. Jimmy Gomez didn’t expect the day to be this long, but he took the opportunity to send a message:

I wanted to have Hodge with me and show it. He is my son and I am proud of him, I hope I am not the only representative coming to vote with my little boy […] It must be normal for fathers to bring their children with them, whether they are stay-at-home dads or working dads. […] People were surprised that I brought it with me, but too bad. I think you send a message: we men have to do our part.

If Jimmy Gomez wishes to change his mind at the moment, it is still women who carry out most of the parenting tasks, even if they often work as hard, or even more, than their peers. In short, a nice gesture, but one that will have to be repeated again and again to have a little impact on our society.
