UPDATE, with new cooperation Deadline: Murders in the State of OhioThe play, starring Audra McDonald, which made history by being the first Broadway production by acclaimed 91-year-old playwright Adrienne Kennedy, will have its final performance on Sunday, January 15.
Although generally rated well, Murders in the State of Ohio struggled at the box office, earning just $311,893 for nine performances during Broadway’s generally profitable New Year’s week. In the week ending January 1, attendance at the recently renamed James Earl Jones Theater was just 49%.
Directed by Kenny Leon Murders in the State of Ohio McDonald stars as a writer and teacher dealing with a horrific incident from her past: the murder of her two young daughters. The production also included Bryce Pinkham, Lizan Mitchell, Mister Fitzgerald and Abigail Stephenson, and students Brett Diggs, Brooke Gardner, Christian Pedersen and Gayle Samuels.
Murders in the State of Ohio began previewing on Friday 11 November 2022 and officially opened on Thursday 8 December. This is the opening production at Jones.
With the announcement Murders in the State of Ohio will be the 12th current or recent Broadway production to close this month. Most shows end pre-planned limited engagements, as often happens after the holiday season Ohio State Murders, Almost Famous and A strange loop were scheduled as open runs.
After the planned closure on January 1 of the A Christmas songother shows closing this month include 1776, almost famous, Beetlejuice and In the forest (all closed on January 8); A Strange Loop, Death of A Salesman, The Music Man, Mike Birbiglia’s The Old Man & the Pooland Top dog/under dog (15. January); and The piano lesson (January 29).
The Non-Professional Manhattan Theater ClubCooperation was scheduled to close on January 29, but today announced a two-week extension. Anthony McCarten’s play about artists Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, starring Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope, is playing now through Sunday, February 5 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
