British author Fay Weldon, best known for her popular novels The life and love of a devil and exercise died at the age of 91.
A family statement shared by Weldon’s agent on Twitter broke the news.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fay Weldon (CBE), author, essayist and playwright,” the statement said. “She passed away peacefully this morning, January 4, 2023.”

Born in Worcester, England in 1931, Weldon has written more than 30 novels, including Dividethe Booker Prize shortlist exerciseand The life and love of a devilwhich was adapted by the BBC in 1986. The novel is Weldon’s most famous novel and follows a married woman who goes to great lengths to get revenge on her husband and his attractive mistress.
Weldon’s extensive body of work also includes several short stories, plays and works for television, theater and film. Weldon’s 1980 novel puffball was adapted for the big screen in 2007. The film was directed by Nicolas Roeg and starred Donald Sutherland and Miranda Richardson.
In 1996, Weldon was also a member of the official competition jury for the 46th Berlin International Film Festival.
In 2001, Weldon was appointed a CBE in the New Year’s Honors List for services to literature. She withdrew from public discourse in recent years and returned in 2020 with a post on her personal website, in which she told fans that she had been hospitalized with a broken back bone.
