M3gan is not scary: it debunks the ravages of capitalism on children (and it’s funny!)

We are nostalgic Of chucky and annabelle, these dolls are no longer really creepy but obsessed with killing. So, just to say we welcomed the announcement of the release of M3gan with sympathy. And you know what? The movie was a pleasant surprise!

M3gan, what is it about?

M3egan is a technological miracle, a cyber-doll whose artificial intelligence is programmed to be the ideal companion for children and the safest ally for parents. Designed by brilliant toy company roboticist Gemma, M3gan can listen, observe and learn by becoming both the friend and teacher, playmate and protector of the child to whom she is related..

When Gemma suddenly becomes responsible for her 8-year-old niece, Cady, whose parents have suddenly died, she is completely unprepared for her role. Overwhelmed and pressured at work, she decides to link her M3gan prototype to the child, desperate to solve his problems on both counts.

A decision that will have dire consequences…

An original doll movie

Shared before the release of the film, the first images of M3ganmade of you dance TikTok robotics, we had it portends a rather terrifying film. In fact, it’s much better than that : from start to finish, M3gan wide open the floodgates of the thousandth degree and assumes such a self-deprecating bias which becomes especially fun and as one might suspect, ultra embarrassing.

In this, the film is much closer to aa Scary movie (version it’s not a problem, and that’s fine) or a Night of the Living Dead than a more traditional horror film. Don’t go here expecting no sleep at night, you will be disappointed. On the other hand, expect big slices of laughterbut also to discover a raw history of capitalism which, apparently nothing, that makes you think.

We compared M3gan to annabelle and chucky : And yet, the new film stamped by horror master James Wan is much more than a modernized, special effects-stuffed version of all doll movies. In most of these scary stories, toy rhymes with demonic possession. M3gan opens another way, and tells something else.

Absurd characters like capitalism

In M3ganone idea is particularly brilliant: all adults are all completely stupid. But really: completely. Weak.

All the actors of the film by Gerard Johnstone play the game of gullibilitystarting with Allison Williams (known for her role in go out) who wonderfully embodies this aunt who, even if she is supposed to be a scientist gifted, systematically 55899 delayed trains.

When the aunt activates M3gan for the first time, the doll immediately does what she wants and gives a terrifying smile. In other words, from the first second, it is as big as a truck M3gan is an idea catastrophic. He doesn’t even have to pretend to be obedient to create the illusion! Similarly, since a series of heinous murders have taken place in the neighborhood since M3gan’s arrival, all the police officers find themselves saying in front of the doll, who doesn’t even bother to clean the blood from her victims in her hair is : “Wow, she’s good. »

Should we conclude that the movie takes us for idiots with characters we don’t believe for a second? For nothing !

If M3gan has enough power to become a bloodthirsty beast, it’s not because of a demon or bad luck, but because adults do nothing to prevent it. It’s even the opposite : they make it easier. Because, through M3gan, adults find their interest: they save time and money. Deep down, Cady’s aunt doesn’t want to destroy the doll, because thanks to her she doesn’t have to overcome his laziness to educate his granddaughter. And besides, it becomes rich.

Finally, what are we talking about M3gan through the metaphor of this doll capable of anything technology companiesit is from these generations of babies born with cameras, algorithms, tape recorders, TikTok, artificial intelligences in the cradle. Contrary to chucky Where is it annabelle, M3gan describes with scathing humor how capitalism messes up human relationships, starting with the education of children. And it’s successful.
