Spanish cinemas continue to celebrate wonderful parties and say goodbye to the year 2022 while maintaining the Christmas weekend collection and viewership figures. Over the New Year’s weekend, 686,194 tickets were sold and a gross of €4.71 million was achieved, according to Comscore data.

Our country continues to be the territory of “Avatar: The Sense of Water”, which continues to dominate far above any other film on the bill. James Cameron’s film adds another 3 million euros and reaches a total of 26.76 million euros in just three weeks. That’s more than 11 million euros more throughout the week. As we have already seen, it leaves behind ‘Minions: The Origin of Gru’ and becomes the highest-grossing film of the year in our country. Nearly 4 million viewers have already come to see the film, and with a drop of only 17% it doesn’t look like it will stop earning anytime soon. The sequel to ‘Avatar’ continues with a decidedly higher share of screens than the rest, but the public is responding to Pandora’s appeal, bringing theaters to maximum attendance in times of pandemic.
Quite far, in second position, we find ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’. The DreamWorks Animation film increases its collection slightly compared to the previous weekend and adds €627,067 to a total of €3.13 million. In two weeks it has already surpassed Disney’s ‘Strange World’, but it is still a long way from the 7.22 million that DreamWorks’ ‘The Bad Guys’ made a few months ago.
The strongest premiere of the week is “The Worst Neighbor in the World”. The film starring Tom Hanks occupies the third position with €310,300, which rises to €558,800 if we add the takings on Wednesdays and Thursdays. He’s had a hard time carving out the gap between “Avatar” and family films over the holidays, so we’ll have to wait and see how he fares when Christmas is over.
Santiago Segura has also started the year on the right foot since then ‘A todo tren 2′ also increases its collection compared to last weekend. It adds €239,808 to a total of €4.86m, so it still has a push to top God’s crooked lines’ €5.7m.
‘Pray for the Devil’ debuts in fifth position. The horror film collects just €147,283 in its first weekend (€309,444 counting from Wednesday). Fairly weak data for a horror film, which does not reach the premiere of ‘Veneciaphrenia’ or ‘Venus’, which debuted in its range.
Good news on the charts is the big retention of ‘Aftersun’, which is getting good word of mouth and which is increasing its collection by 3% compared to the previous week. ‘As bestas’ is also holding up beautifully in its eighth week, with a total collection of over 3.5 million euros. In not-so-great news, the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” plummets to number eight in its second week, down 57% from its premiere.
Previews are brought forward to Wednesday
Since Friday is Three Kings Day, previews for the week are pushed forward to Wednesday again. The main novelty in theaters is ‘M3GAN’, queen of the Internet, Blumhouse’s new horror proposal that will have to prove that it is able to get as many tickets as there are memes on the Internet. Other films released in theaters are ‘Operation Fortune: The Great Hoax’, ‘Hunt’. Spy Hunt’, ‘Living’ or ‘The Awakening of Mary’.
