A government official told the mother of a child with a chronic condition that some children “are struggling to adapt to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic”.
The official wrote: “While many children show remarkable resilience in difficult conditions, the government recognizes that some find this time particularly difficult for their mental health and well-being.”
The letter continues to list all measures taken to improve children’s mental health, including more funding and better access to mental health hotlines.
He adds that children with “severe mental illness” will receive face-to-face psychotherapy sessions. In the 470-word answer, the phrase “mental health” is used 15 times. Long Covid is not mentioned.

While children are unlikely to experience severe short-term symptoms of Covid, growing evidence suggests they are prone to long-term illness even after a mild infection – patients may experience headaches, body aches and fatigue for months.

“To suggest that children with long-term Covid are not resilient enough is extremely hurtful, not just for my child, but for all children with this chronic health condition.
“This letter shows that the core of the government does not understand the situation at all.”
