Trendy cannabis products, with sales of £700m per year in the UK, don’t seem to relieve the pain, according to a large US study.

Sales of oils, sprays, and ointments containing cannabidiol (CBD), one of the main active ingredients of cannabis, but not causing the “high” associated with a class B drug, have increased over the past decade. Exploded.

Many advertisements for CBD products imply health benefits, including pain relief, but manufacturers are prohibited from making explicit claims as almost all are classified as dietary supplements. But researchers found little evidence to help in this regard in a US government-sponsored study.

In the Annals of Internal Medicine, co-author Professor Marian McDonagh of Oregon Health and Science University wrote: [US] US consumers can assume that there will be more evidence of benefits and side effects. Unfortunately, there is very little scientifically based research on many of these products.

POPULAR: The market for CBD products has grown tremendously in recent years

Products high in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound that causes the “high” in cannabis, appeared to help chronic pain, at least in the short term, but patients who took them often experienced lethargy and nausea, the researchers said.

However, CBD products sold in UK stores cannot contain more than 1mg of legally controlled cannabinoids such as THC. For a 30g bottle of CBD oil, this equates to about 0.003% THC.

Dr. Amir Englund, from the Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience at King’s College London, said: “There are almost no well-designed studies of cannabis pain relief products,” and very few have tested the products with a placebo.
