Experts praised a cutting-edge vaccine that could prevent pancreatic cancer from returning.
Early research findings show that personalized vaccines prepare the body to prevent the deadly disease from returning.
Only a quarter of patients survive a year or more after diagnosis, and pancreatic cancer often goes undetected because the immune system does not detect the cancer cells as a threat.
But a small subset of patients outweigh the possibilities after tumor removal. At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Dr. A team led by Vinod Balachandran found that their tumors contained large numbers of pathogen-destroying T cells.

They designed a study that included 16 people with pancreatic cancer who received special vaccines after surgery.
The vaccine uses a piece of the tumor’s genetic code to teach cells to make a protein that will trigger an immune response.
This allows the body to “recognize” the cancer as a threat and if it returns, the T cells will destroy it. In eight of the participants, the vaccine activated T cells to recognize the disease. After 18 months, they were cancer-free.
Dr. Balachandran told the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual conference in Chicago: “All treatments for pancreatic cancer are currently largely ineffective.
“Initial results suggest that if you have an immune response, you may have a better outcome.”

Most of the patients who did not respond to the vaccine saw the cancer return, and some died.
The vaccine was developed with pharmaceutical giant BioNTech and US company Genentech, which uses similar mRNA technology to make the Covid vaccine.

In the UK, around 10,500 people are diagnosed with the disease each year, and 9,600 of them die.
