In 2013, Naughty Dog released one of the most acclaimed and also the most important video games of the last decade, “The Last of Us”. With such a well-known and successful story, its director, Neil Druckmann, talks about why he decided to adapt the game into a live action series, and the reasons explaining that it is to bring the foreign agent closer to interactive art , to another type of media expression.

During the Comic-Con Experience (CCXP), which took place in Brazil, Neil Druckmann explained why adapt ‘The Last of Us’ into a series for HBO, and replied: “Sometimes I get asked why adapt the game if it connects well with people? I see it differently, and it’s that some people don’t play games, so they won’t be able to experience this story, and I think what we’ve created at Naughty Dog is worth transferring to another medium.”

With over 3 million copies sold worldwide, the story of Joel and Ellie has been a huge success and has been hailed by some pundits as “The Citizen Kane of video games”. However, there are many people who, for various reasons, have not touched a video game, Neil Druckman wants to bring non-gamers closer to the story of ‘The Last of Us’.

“My greatest hope is that someone watches this series and is moved by it. And then say, “Wait, this is based on a video game.” You mean like Pacman?’ And they will understand it there another medium full of stories and experiences. That’s what I hope comes out of all this,” said Neil Druckman of the series with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Why is the story of “The Last of Us” so acclaimed?

To begin with, in the midst of the Triple A video game, that is, the large productions, a dark, violent and adult world had rarely been explored. This added to the fact that stories like ‘Children of Men’ or ‘The Road’ were major influences, the result was ‘The Last of Us’, a story about a father who loses his daughter and sees the opportunity in a new girl to be a dad again.

But more heartbreaking than that, the context in which Joel and Ellie live, a city of Boston destroyed by the spread of a virus that turns humans into savages, has made society seek only its own survival. It is then that the protagonist of “The Last of Us” begins his journey to bring Ellie to a group that could change the course of humanity.

‘The Last of Us’ for HBO will debut on January 15, 2023 and will star Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Pedro Pascal with Bella Ramsey.
