Director Shawn Levi it’s not just developing Deadpool 3 for Marvel Studios, is also developing a Star Wars film for Lucasfilm. He’s got the chance to star in some really great cinematic sandboxes, and it’s exciting to see what he ends up bringing to these franchises. It’s funny because I never thought I’d see the guy behind it Night at the Museum movies that make this kind of movie! But he’s really become a talented director over the years.
During a recent interview with Collider, Levy opened up about his excitement about the Star Wars project, saying:
“If you’d told me when I was directing Big Fat Liar that one day I’d be working on the biggest TV show in the world and I’d be directing Marvel followed by Star Wars, I’d have said ‘You’re fucking crazy. ‘ But he’s so thrilling and he’s the kind of great storytelling on canvas that I have always dreamed of doing.
“I was lucky because ironically it started with Night at the Museum where you’re really building a world, and you’re incorporating comedy and heart. And you and I talked a lot, that’s just what I tried to do on Free Guy and the Adam Project. And so getting calls from both Marvel and Lucasfilm is really rewarding. Because I’ve been doing this job for a while and these are calls I was hoping to get one day. And the fact that it’s all coming up now and these are the next few years of my life is really… I’m just thrilled. I have no deeper words than that. I am happy and excited about it every day.”
As you know, Lucasfilm has announced several over the years Star Wars movies with attached directors that have yet to go anywhere. Levy is very aware of this, but has explained his attitude towards the whole affair as follows:
“I have this golden ticket to a distant galaxy and I will be dedicated to developing a script that gives me the privilege of making this film. I don’t tie into stuff because it looks good in a commercial ad. I stick to the things I intend to do. And you better believe I won’t waste this luscious opportunity. I’ll kick my ass. But first, I have to work hard to make Deadpool. So it’s definitely long-term planning, but I want to be one of the films that gets to the starting line because these are rare opportunities and I want to make the most of them.”
Gotta love her attitude! Of course, he won’t share details of the story she’s working on, but he does discuss his working relationship with Kathleen Kennedy, saying:
“I’ve been talking to Kathy Kennedy for a while now, and she’s been aware of my passion for this franchise for a long time. The stars finally aligned, and she came up to me and said, let’s do something here. Ed It’s like as far as I can tell. But this is definitely development and not close to preparation yet. So there’s a lot of work to do.”
Levy has had quite an interesting career as a director and I really hope he can pull it off Star Wars movie! At this point, I don’t know if we’ll ever see another one Star Wars movie back on the big screen! They can’t seem to agree over there about this.
