Sony announces another Spider-Man villain movie starring Donald Glover

Sony has been tasked with expanding its cinematic universe of villains, beyond the more notorious enemies of the arachnid, such as Venom or Morbius. They now have several projects in development and have announced one more to the slate, it is a new film about one of the lesser known Spiderman villains, which will be played by actor Donald Glover.

According to information from The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has confirmed the development of Hypno Hustler, a new Spiderman film starring Donald Glover, who will also be the producer. For those who don’t know him, Glover is recognized for the ‘Community’ series, ‘Han Solo: A Star Wars Story’ as well as having a brief appearance in ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’.

The movie of Hypno Hustler will be written by Myles Murphy, who has worked on titles such as ‘Black Widow’, ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Us’, among others, but this will be his first job as a screenwriter. The rest of the details are being kept under wraps, and right now that’s all the details we have of another villain movie to add to ‘Madame Web’, ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘El Muerto’.

As for the character, Hypno Hustler is a Spider-Man villain created by Bill Mantlo and Frank Springer., first appearing in 1978’s Spectacular Spider-Man #24. He uses his hypnotic powers through music, which makes sense for Donald Glover, given his career as a singer. The character has a very close connection to disco, but in his adaptation he could be modernized in a different style.

Donald Glover and his proximity to Spiderman

Hypno Hustler joins Sony’s Spiderman projects, as well as the arachnid series for Amazon Prime Video. However, it is still unknown how the connection with the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be, since, in the MCU, Donald Glover already gives life to a character in a deleted scene of ‘Homecoming’, where it seemed that he was Miles’ uncle, Morales.

Glover is also a big fan of the arachnid, as is known for his cameo wearing a Spider-Man shirt in ‘Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse’, which actually belongs in a scene from ‘Community’. On the other hand, he also lent his voice to Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spiderman animated series, so we’ll have to wait for details on the connections between the MCU and the USS.

Sony has several films lined up that will eventually form its USS, however, there is uncertainty as to whether that many Spider-Verse projects will work simultaneously. In 2023, ‘Madame Web’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter’ will arrive, two films with big names like Dakota Johnson and Aaron-Taylor Johnson, but it is unknown which Spiderman belongs to this universe.
