A new origin story Winnie the Pooh the film is in the works by Baboon Animation and IQI Media. The story will be a prequel to the beloved book series by AA Milne. The property was owned by Disney for several decades but recently went public, allowing for new iterations to be told by different companies.

Mike de Seve (Madagascar, Monsters vs aliens) will direct and co-write with fellow DreamWorks alum John Reynolds (The Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show).

Reynolds said of the project:

“We tell the surprising origin story of the silly bear and his friends, when they were still children, in a way designed to connect with children of the 21st century.”

Kelly commented:

“AA Milne’s Bear has aged gracefully over the last hundred years. But what happened in the past that made him and his friends who they are in the book? One heck of a big adventure, that’s what – one that needs a big screen. The audience will be transported to a place they never expected.”

Added de Seve:

“I think this unsinkable young pup is totally relatable to today’s kids, with his hellish lust for honey and his ridiculous plans to get it. The whole gang is hilarious and even more so as a kid, we’re finding out.

The creators noted the success of reboots like Peter Rabbit And Paddington, so it seems that this should be a good movie for fans of the established story. I think it will be a bit strange to have a Winnie the Pooh film that is not from Disney, but as long as they are faithful to the origin and to the fans, I think it will work. Think you’ll check out this new prequel?
