Earlier this year, we reported that director Shawn Levi announced that Disney+ is in the early stages of developing a series adaptation based on the film Real steel, which may or may not continue the story. The film is set in a not too distant future where human boxers have been replaced by awesome giant fighting robots.
In the movie, Hugh Jackman he played a former boxer who reconnects with his estranged son while fixing an old robot they find in a junkyard. They end up turning that robot into a winning fighter named Camelot.
In a recent interview with Collider, Levy gave a little update on the series, saying:
The series “Is in a very active and promising development. I’m really excited about the ideas we’re exploring. But as you can see from my cautious words, I can’t tell you about the writer or the timeline just yet.
This is the first mention he’s made of the project with a writer, so it sounds like a step in the right direction! He also talked about being overprotective of the franchise, which is why it has taken so long to get the ball rolling. He explains:
“But I will say we have heard a lot of tones. And I realized over the course of those pitches that I’m fiercely protective of “Real Steel.” I’d rather have no show than a bad show. And I finally heard a take that takes the tradition of film and does some really exciting stuff with it. I’m finally really excited about where we’re headed.
This movie was a really great family movie and I think there’s a lot of fun story to play with. Stay tuned for more updates on the series as it develops.
