Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ copyright dropped

TO UPDATE: Taylor Swift has fought a copyright lawsuit that claims she plagiarized the lead song for her 1989 Album. Songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler both dropped the lawsuit, saying they would dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning they can’t refile, according to Reuters.

A trial for the case was originally scheduled to begin on January 17. Court filings filed Monday did not say whether there was an agreement between the parties.

The end of the legal battle also clears the way for Swift to re-record her album.

So far, September 3, 2020: A Los Angeles federal court judge has ruled that two songwriters who claim their lyrics were stolen by Taylor Swift for her massive 2014 hit Shake off can have a case.

U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald said that songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler “have sufficiently alleged that there is a protectable choice and arrangement or sequence of creative expression” and that Swift’s “use is allegedly similar enough” to defeat the motion to dismiss to show, to make fair in order to survive.

Hall and Butler sued in 2017 over the 2001 3LW survey Playas will play was the source of Swift’s lyrics about her Shake off.

The song by 3LW contains the lyrics “Playas they’ll play and haters they’ll hate”.
