This year’s sci-fi adventure film Everything everywhere all at once it was one of the best films of the year. It covered family relationships, martial arts, interdimensional travel, and hot dog fingers. What more could you ask for, really? There is a lot of awards hype surrounding the film and its star, Michelle Yeoh. But before he showed up to shoot the film, Yeoh had a request for The Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), who wrote and directed the film, and it was something she wasn’t willing to give up on.
Talking with Cate Blanchett in the context of Of variety In the “Actors on Actors” series, Yeoh revealed that her character’s original name in the script was Michelle Wang. While she has great things to say about the film’s directors, she explained the one change she had to make:
“The only thing I told them was, ‘The character can’t be called Michelle Wang.’ I’m like, ‘But why? So are you.’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m not an Asian immigrant mother who runs a laundromat. She needs her voice.’ This was the only thing. I’m like, ‘If you don’t change the name, I’m not going in.’”
The character’s name was eventually changed to Evelyn Wang, and now Yeoh will likely be heading to the Academy Awards after garnering some of the best reviews of her career. Her beloved portrayal of her in the film even led Time magazine to name Yeoh as its 2022 icon.
He went on to sing the directors praises, saying:
“I always want to work with younger directors. Because they throw you challenges that don’t happen to you often. I was very gratified that I was finally getting a script with a very anonymous woman, an immigrant woman, and she’s been around us for a long time, trying to live the American dream — and so have I. amazing, it’s very fulfilling, because I think it’s all of us.
Her performance was incredible and the film was so outrageous and touching and beautiful. I can’t wait to see what awards it collects. Everything everywhere all at once is available to watch on Showtime with a subscription, as well as streaming and DVD/Blu-Ray platforms.
