Nintendo Switch is a fantastic gaming hardware. There’s no denying it. Plus, it’s still incredibly popular as it was one of the top sellers in November deals (Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc). Heck, I’ve had two families I know buy a Switch in November asking me for input on games and accessories. Yet invariably, at least once a month, I see a reputable gaming news site utter two words that make my blood boil: Switch Pro.
We’ve already agreed that the Switch is great; it was revolutionary enough in its day that, I believe, served as the inspiration for other popular gaming hardware solutions like the Steam Deck; and is extremely popular almost 6 years later. I think most of us can also agree that the Nintendo Switch isn’t the most powerful machine out there. Nintendo seems to have sacrificed a lot of power for portability and cost factors. For some gamers, this is a sacrifice well worth it, and others can’t go two minutes without complaining about how other gaming hardware options are more powerful, which prompts Nintendo to keep explaining why it’s okay, show examples of games Switches that look great, etc. Then, there are people who insist that there is a secret next-gen version of the Switch that Nintendo is working on that goes by a few different names over the years, but the most prevalent is the Switch Pro.
The first talks of a Switch Pro occurred in early 2020, and maybe even a little earlier. Switch Pro is one such white whale that seems to have been around forever with leakers, insiders, etc. who are always teasing something and some are even saying that fans should expect news soon. Then, the news never happens, everyone pretends the Switch Pro rumors never happened, and everyone starts talking about the Switch Pro again, creating hype for a hypothetical machine.
If you want to go around and tweet about some fantasy wishlist about Switch Pro features or whatever, that’s fine. I can get over it and would like to share some of my dreams and wishes with you. However, I see many big and reputable sites that talk about it and have headlines like “Everything we know about Nintendo Switch Pro”. Dear journalists, this is misleading clickbait and you should all be ashamed of yourself for having and constantly writing and/or updating them. While I’m not a fan of it yet, GamesRadar+ at least has the decency to mention in the title that it’s a “rumor console”.
Is it possible there will be a Switch Pro release in 2023 as current rumors suggest? Yes. However, we must mention that insiders and leakers alike have claimed that a Switch Pro announcement has been around the corner for over 18 months! This is a giant damn corner! Will I be thrilled if Nintendo announces a Switch Pro? Also, yes! I don’t think they’d call it the Switch Pro, but I’d be thrilled if they announced a more powerful version of this phenomenal handheld console.
I’m sick and tired of reading headline after headline about Schrodinger’s Switch Pro. If you’re an average reader, please don’t click on articles discussing new rumors for a Switch Pro. You’re fueling clickbait and building hopes that may very well be dashed. If you are a journalist or write for a website, please stop writing these clickbait pieces. Just wait for official news from Nintendo. They probably won’t be sneaking out a new console.
