Video game gift guide for 2022

Here at GeekTyrant are some gamers and friends of gamers. This time of year, people are always on the lookout for gifts for their friends and family, and I’ve compiled a list of gift ideas for the video game fan in your life to consider. I will try to reach a wide range of budgets for everyone.

I also highly recommend asking the fans in your life what they want or need before buying anything. You don’t want to be that person who buys something that person bought themselves 6 months ago. If you have any other more specific thoughts or recommendations, leave them in the comments below and help others as they shop for their loved ones.

Additionally, many of the links below are affiliate links that you can use to shop at no extra cost to yourself while supporting us here at GeekTyrant.

Gift cards

I know it’s basic, but it’s very effective. Buy them a gift card to their favorite game store. Whether it’s a physical store like GameStop or a digital store like the Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop, or Steam, a gift card makes a great gift. The individual can then use it to actually buy the games or DLC they really want with less guesswork on your part. There are physical and digital gift cards, or if you go to your local GameStop, they can often sell you a gift card on a receipt if they don’t have the physical cards in stock.

Likewise, I will recommend signing up for GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards. It costs about $15 for a year, and each month, the member gets a $5 GameStop gift card that they can use on anything they want, including gift cards to their favorite digital game stores. There are other perks, but the biggest draw in my opinion is that $5 monthly credit.

The games they want

I have yet to meet a gamer who doesn’t have a mile long wish list of games. No matter what they play, there is always a long list of games they wish they could own. Depending on which platform you choose, you may not be able to purchase the item in a store, but most digital platforms will allow you to purchase games for others. The only one I know off the top of my head that doesn’t let you do this is the Nintendo eShop. That said, if you’re unable to buy the game for your favorite gamers for whatever reason, you can always buy a gift card and tell them it’s specifically for the purchase of Game X. This is honestly my favorite type of card gift.

Controllers

If your gamer plays on console then he might need some extra controllers so that he can play with his friends and family on the same console. This will depend on what games your favorite gamer likes to play and whether or not they support local multiplayer. I always recommend using the original controllers first, but they tend to be a bit more expensive. Other brands I’ve had good experiences with include PowerA and NexiGo.

For PC gamers, controllers are absolutely great, but they could also benefit from a new keyboard and/or mouse. There are many options, but typically a mechanical keyboard is the way to go. I personally really liked my Logitech G512 with brown switches and my Logitech G502 HERO mouse. Of course, some people might want the smaller keyboards without the 10-key pad or want to go wireless, so just do a little research beforehand.

If your gamer is into mobile gaming, they can also benefit from the joy of controllers. There are controller options like the Backbone One or Razer Kishi that let you pop your phone into it for a Switch-like experience, or you can purchase affordable mounts for pre-existing controllers that hold the phone. I’ve only used the latter solution, but they tend to work pretty well, just make sure it’s compatible with your friend’s favorite controller. These are also great solutions if your friend is interested in cloud gaming through NVIDIA GeForce Now, Xbox Game Pass, Amazon Luna, or another service. Yes, you can get a dedicated cloud gaming device like the Logitech G Cloud, but in my opinion this solution is a bit more practical.

Skins

There are tons of companies out there making skins that you can apply to your consoles, PCs, controllers, etc. to show part of your personality. Whether it’s a favorite sports team or a gaming franchise, skins are usually more or less stickers that you can apply to the item and make it more personalized. I haven’t done it myself, but you can find sites like SkinIt, dbrand and Wrappz.

Game related merchandise

Games these days are rarely limited to just playing. The characters and icons are often found on mugs, pins, clothing, Funko Pops, action figures and more. For the last couple of years I’ve gotten my best friend’s Destiny-themed merchandise instead of actual games and he’s loved it. It’s also great because merchandising is an area that probably has the widest range of prices. You can often find some stuff for as little as $5 or as much as $100+. Etsy, GameStop, Premium Bandai, Sideshow, and Tee Turtle are great places to look for collectibles.
