HP Lovecraft’S To the mountains of madness it was a passion project for the director Guillermo del Toro, and it’s something he hasn’t been able to get off the ground and put into production. It’s a project he doesn’t give up on, and after making his stop-motion animated film, Pinocchiothe director is now considering developing it To the mountain of madness as an animated stop-motion film with visual effects artist legend Phil Tippett!

This news comes from IndieWire and the director continued by telling them: “I said it would be ideal to do Mountains of madness like stop motion. You watch animation in a more ecstatic way than live action. It’s almost a hypnotic act, and in this way the relationship with the story becomes more intimate”.

I would really like to see Del Toro do this! I’d like to see To the mountain of madness like a stop-motion animated film! It could be a visually stunning and terrifying film and it would be amazing if del Toro and Tippett teamed up to make it.

It would be a long and expensive production, but it would be really worth it. Del Toro seems to have a strong relationship with Netflix with projects like Cabinet of curiosities And Pinocchio, and it seems Netflix would be the obvious place for him to do it. But we’ll see if that’s something they really want to do.

Del Toro has previously talked about making the film on Netflix and spoke about the project saying:

“The problem with Mountains is that the script I co-wrote fifteen years ago isn’t the script I was going to do now, so I need to rewrite it. Not just to scale it in some way, but because I was trying to bridge the scale back then. it with elements that would make it pass through the machinery of the studio.”

He went on to say that if he could make the film on Netflix, he could “move to a much more esoteric, weirder, smaller version” and shared:

“You know, where do I go back to some of the scenes that have been left out. Some of the big sets I’ve designed, for example, I don’t like. Like, I’ve done this or that giant set before. I feel like going in a more strange.”

Tom Cruise he was originally set to star in the original project, but del Toro was not going to bring him on now. He is trying to cast mostly unknown:

“You know, I think the age has changed now. Tom is fifteen years older. I think…it would be a different cast. If I could, I’d cast mostly strangers and go on the star journey.”

The director also talked about how crazy and creepy the ending of the story is, saying:

“I know the ending we have is one of the most intriguing, weird and creepy endings, for me. There are about four horror scenes that I love in the original script. So, you know, that would be my hope. I will definitely get a call every six months from part of Don Murphy saying “Are we doing this or what? Are you going to do it next or what?” and I’m like ‘I need to take the time to rewrite this.'”

To the mountains of madness centers on a 1930s expedition to Antarctica, in which a group of explorers led by a scientist encounter the remains of an ancient civilization.

I hope Del Toro finally gets to bring this story to life. I don’t care how he does it, I just want to see him!
