Fans believe that fidelity to the source material makes adaptation, while big producers look for their products to be profitable. This is the case with the recent revelation made by Nate Moore, executive producer of Marvel Studios, who said that the company has always sought directors and writers who aren’t fans of comics take responsibility for the adaptations.

In an interview for The Town (via The Direct), Nate Moore said so Marvel Studios is looking for creators who don’t like comicsa revelation that surprises fans, since, ever since Robert Downey Jr.’s “Iron Man,” MCU films have been inspired by events that were previously read on the printed pages of comics.

According to the manufacturer, Marvel wants directors and writers with no idea of the original story, so that they can interpret events in an original way and offer solutions that could not have occurred to them before. “Many times they are writers who love Marvel. And for me, that’s always a red flag. Because I’m like, ‘oh no, I don’t want you to already have a pre-existing idea of what that is, because you grew up with number 15 and that’s what you want to recreate,’ she explained.

This supposed creative freedom is for Marvel to offer their artists new stories or, for that matter, question the source material. Something that can be traced back to ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ of which Taika Waititi offered a fresh comedy with his own style, but which has little to do with the “faithful” to the comic. But that also leads to some issues with the filmmakers behind their projects.

Wonder and creative freedom towards its artists

Although they are now used to bringing in big names, such as Taika Waititi, James Gunn or Jon Watts, to take over their films and series for Disney+, Moore says this strategy has also led them to have some problems with the creative freedom they offer to their workers, such as Edgar Wright, who was involved in an adaptation of “Ant-Man” a few years ago.

In that case, Edgar Wright was a big fan of Ant-Man, but due to some creative differences with the company, the director of ‘Last Night in Soho’ had to withdraw, leaving the franchise due to limitations. In this sense, Marvel seeks with its films to reach a wider audience, and of which not many of them have touched a comic book in their lifetime.

That’s why, to a large extent, this strategy has worked for them so that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a huge event with every movie that comes out in theaters or series that comes out through Disney+. So we’ll have to wait to find out which new names join their ranks.
