The first trailer has been released for the upcoming drama I am Ruth, which highlights the endemic mental health crisis affecting young people. The film is the protagonist Kate Winslet with whom he also co-wrote the story Dominic Wild. Winslet stars alongside her real-life daughter Mia Threapleton in the movie.
The film offers an “honest and authentic portrait of the increasingly strained relationship between mother and daughter. Winslet plays Ruth, a loving and concerned mother who sees her teenage daughter Freya (Threapleton) withdraw into herself as she becomes increasingly consumed by the pressures of social media.
As a father of three teenage girls, I have seen firsthand how the pressures of social media and online bullying affect children. Sometimes it can be super tough. This is definitely a film made for our times that addresses mental health issues that many of us may be able to relate to.
This film is part of the ‘I Am’ anthology series, which stars famous actresses who tell stories centered around women. The first round of films featured Vicky McClure, Samantha Morton And Gem Chan. The second starred Suranne Jones, Letizia Wright And Lesley Manville. Winslet I am Ruth is the first chapter of the third season, with more chapters to be announced soon.
