Netflix’s most successful series, Stranger thingsis preparing to bring us its fifth and final season, and after the dark and scary fourth we experienced earlier this year, fans are wondering what kind of season the series will wrap up.

During an FYC panel on Sunday night, the creators Matt and Ross Dufferdirector Shawn Levi and stars Millie Bobby Brown (who participated virtually), Caleb McLaughlin, Priah Ferguson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Joseph Quinn And Edward Francotalked about the processes of the fourth season.

At the end of the conversation, moderator Patton Osvalt attempted to get a scoop from the executive producers on season five’s tone, asking if there were any new horror legends or pop culture moments they planned to reference. Ross Duffer explained:

“Five, as we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it has a little bit of each of them. Whereas before each season was so distinctly… [Season] 3 is our big summer blockbuster season with big monsters, and [Season] 4 was the psychological horror. I think what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a bit, sort of in a 1″ tone.

He added that “in terms of scale,” the latest batch of episodes are “more aligned with what [Season] 4 is.” Ross told the audience, “I hope there’s a little bit of everything.”

While no spoilers were revealed during their 45-minute discussion, the team did share that the first episode (entitled “The Crawl”) has finished, and that the two-hour meeting with the Netflix team, during which they outlined the master plan for in the end, made the executives cry. ross said:

“Just as important as the supernatural, we have so many characters now, most of whom are still alive. It’s important to wrap up these arcs because so many of these characters have grown up since season one. So, it’s a balancing act between giving them time to complete their character arcs and also sorting out those loose ends and making our final reveals.

Levy noted that while he is “paralyzed with fear” of screwing something up, he is continually impressed by the work the Duffers do, saying:

“Even though the show has become so famous and the characters have become so iconic, and they talk so much about the ’80s and the supernatural and genre, it’s about these people. It’s about these characters. Season 5 is already clearly dealing with these character stories, because they’ve always been the lifeblood of ‘Stranger Things.’

I’m sad that the series is almost over, but I’m excited to see it end on time. It’s the exact story the Duffers set out to tell, and I enjoyed the whole trip.

Netflix has yet to let fans know when Stranger things season 5 will be released, but we will let you know as soon as the news drops.
