The Fables grossed an estimated $160,000 at four theaters in NY and LA this weekend. That’s an average of $40,000 per screen, comparable to recent strong (for post-Covid) special openings such as The Banshees by Inisherin (at $45,000 PSA) and tar (also $40,000), both also on four screens, reflecting a clear upward trend in the field. Spielberg’s written, directed and produced semi-autobiographical story co-debuted in one of the biggest premieres of the year Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The Universal Pictures release has the potential to match the strong weekday sales of older demos (Us Entry ticket to paradise hat) that do not need to open weekend, especially with wakanda Fever or weekends in general. It’s set to expand to 600 screens on November 23 and is likely to go even further given an A theater score, mid 90% Certified Fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes with audiences/critics, strong word of mouth and greater commercial attraction for all other specialty films on the market.
With Gabriel LaBelle, Michele Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and Judd Hirsch, mythical creatures made $60,000 Friday, including Thursday previews; $58,000 Saturday – a better-than-expected win indicating strong word-of-mouth; and Sunday an estimated $43,000.
“Of the mythical creatures, Steven Spielberg has written one of his most personal stories to date, an incredibly universal coming-of-age story that resonated with audiences this weekend,” said Jim Orr, head of domestic distribution at Universal Pictures. “We have no doubt that the film will captivate audiences throughout the holiday season,” he said.
Check-in at a different rate in an increasingly crowded and busy space: banshees, by Searchlight Pictures, which earned $1.7 million in week three in 960 theaters, #7 at the North American box office for an estimated $5.8 million. The distributor said Martin McDonagh’s film, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, continues to do better in Canada, with three of the top-grossing theaters. New York’s Angelika was a standout on Saturday, and the film was seen strongly at the Alamo Drafthouse chain, Brooklyn’s Nighthawk Theaters and AMC Lincoln Square.
tar by Todd Field, starring Cate Blanchett, which ran on 359 screens in week six, took an estimate of $343,000 and earned $4.5 million over the weekend.
Winner of the Palme d’Or in Cannes triangle of sadnessby Neon, also collected $250.8K on 184 screens in week six for a total of $3.5M.
After sun by Charlotte Wells’ A24, starring Paul Mescal, grossed $139.9k on 92 screens for a total of $535k.
by Ali Abassi Holy Spider of Utopia expanded beyond NY and LA this weekend with additional runs in San Francisco, Austin and Philadelphia. The Danish Best International Picture entry will add new markets in the coming weeks, including Chicago and Denver Friday, as well as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver with Canadian distribution partner Sphere. The film earned $20,000 on eight screens in week three for a total of $66.6,000.
From Friday Mubi’s decided to go by Park Chan-wook earned $252,000 across 169 screens in week 4 for a total of $1.23 million.
To by UAR generated sales of $618.2k over 1,358 runs for a total of over $8M. The Chinonye Chukwu film was #9 at the weekend box office.
Dina Amers you look like me went from one screen to two in week 2 for a total of $33.5K. The filmmakers independently distribute the film, and executive producers are Riz Ahmed, Spike Lee, Spike Jonze and Alma Har’el.
The reissue of RRR earned $10,478 at Chicago’s Music Box Theater this weekend, bringing the Week 24 gross for the “encoRRRe” to $262,000. Variance is taking the film to an awards campaign following screenings in Santa Barbara and LA.
