Elizabeth Harris Aitken Dies At 85: Socialite Wife Richard Harris and Rex Harrison, Later Wife of a Prison Chaplain

Elizabeth Harry Aitken, who has been married four times to two movie stars and several cousins, died Friday, April 15, at the age of 85.

The socialist, author, and family patriarch recently became the wife of Jonathan Aitken, an abusive former politician who served in John Major’s Conservative government cabinet, became a devout Christian and prison chaplain.

When Elizabeth Aitken wrote her memoirs at age 40, she named them. Love, respect and care.And she dedicated them to “RH” who could be her first husband, Richard Harris, or second Rex Harrison.

Born Elizabeth Rees-Williams in Wales in 1936, Aitken was the son of a Labor MP. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where she was with future stars Peter O’Toole, Alan Bates and Albert Finn, but is best known as a partner of Irish actor Richard Harris. The couple married in 1957. They stayed together for 11 years and had three children. In the 1980s, Aitken briefly married her cousin, Peter Aitken, with whom Jonathan was having an affair. Her third marriage was devastating, but her reunion with Jonathan was much happier.

They reunited in 2001, when he and Jonathan Aitken’s nephew, Jack Davenport, attended a play starring his son, Jamie Harris. At the time, Jonathan had recently been released from prison for having lied to himself during an embarrassing libel trial and being a devout Christian who later became a prison chaplain.

Thus, after their 2003 marriage, Elizabeth Harris, a legendary former socialite and party receptionist and guest, became the pastor’s wife. He’s also been a devoted home to his extended family, including his three sons, Damian, a filmmaker, BAFTA holder Jared, and fellow actor Jamie.
