AS Stranger things fans prepare for the show’s epic fifth and final season, Opaque AND Ross Duffer are setting the record straight on one of the fandom’s greatest hopes, the return of Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson. Unfortunately, it appears that the beloved D&D-loving metalhead is gone forever.
During a new interview with Empire, Matt Duffer confirmed that fan-favorite character Quinn will not be making it out of the Upside Down this time around.
“I love that Joe Quinn is playing with people! But no, he’s dead. Joe is so busy anyway that everyone should know he’s not coming back.”
“He’s done about five movies since then! When the hell is he going to have time to come and shoot Stranger Things? No, sadly, RIP. He’s completely underground.”
Quinn’s Eddie Munson was an immediate success Stranger things Season 4, leading the Hellfire Club, playing guitar on the Upside Down and delivering one of the show’s most memorable final stands.
His death scene, when he sacrifices himself to buy time for the others during the battle against the Demobates of Vecna, was a harsh blow and has sparked endless theories that he might somehow return.
To be fair, death isn’t always permanent in Hawkins. Dacre MontgomeryBilly made a brief return in season four, appearing as an eerie vision. But in Eddie’s case, the Duffers have made it clear that there’s no resurrection waiting in season five.
While fans mourn the loss of Eddie, there’s still a lot to be excited about in the final chapter. The Duffers revealed it Linda Hamilton she joins the cast as Doctor Kay, a role that turns her usual heroic persona on its head. Duffer joked:
“She’s hyper-intelligent and intimidating. She’s a scientist but can get into a fight and shoot a gun if she needs to.”
Dr. Kay’s arrival signals increased government interference Stranger things barrels towards its cinematic finale. Millie Bobby BrownEleven will find herself hunted once again, with Winona Ryder, Davide Porto, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Grappa, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelmann, Dear Good, Amybeth McNulty, Nell Fisher, Jake ConnellyAND Alex Breaux completing the huge ensemble.
Volume 1 of the three-part final season of Stranger things will debut on November 26 and the Duffers have promised a truly cinematic farewell for the series that changed the face of streaming television.
Eddie Munson may be “completely underground,” but his legacy, and that epic guitar solo in the Upside Down, will live on forever.
