Religion and horror have always had a fairly close relationship, and it is that many of humanity’s fears arise from beliefs, be they in the paranormal, in the inexplicable or in the evil, in a nutshell. These religious horror movies are some of the best modern examples, and most importantly, they are available on streaming platforms.

The Witch

probably one of the best religious horror movies recent years is “The Witch”, released in 2015, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Anya Taylor Joy, Ralph Inneson and others. The story is about a family from the year 1630 who is exiled to live in a forest, inhabited by an ancient, unknown and mysterious horror that brings chaos. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

Santa Maud

Still from the same production house as the previous one, A24, we have the story of Rose Glass, released in 2020, and with Morfydd Clark, “Saint Maud”. The plot of this film follows a young nurse who, after a traumatic event, becomes a faithful Christian devotee and becomes obsessed with saving the soul of a dying patient. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

Mother!

Directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, ‘Mother!’ it’s a horror movie about religion Judeo-Christian, or rather, on the myth of creation. A woman and her partner live a quiet life in a home away from society, until a couple of intruders bring in hundreds of uninvited tenants. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

In one with the best streaming religious horror movies, could not miss ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring, among others, Jennifer Carpenter, Laura Linney, Tom Wikinson. It is a case based on real events, about an atheist lawyer who defends a priest accused of manslaughter when he performed an exorcism on a student. Available on Netflix

Deliver us from evil

Still from the same director Scott Derrickson, but this time with a cast led by Eric Bana, Édgar Ramírez and Olivia Munn, we have “Deliver Us From Evil”. The story follows Ralph Sarchie, a police officer who investigates a series of murders that appear to have been caused by demonic possession, forcing him to seek help from a priest. Available on Netflix.

Apostle

And finally, ‘Apostle’, a religious horror film written and directed by Gareth Evans and starring, among others, Dan Stevens, Lucy Boynton. The story is about Thomas, a man who travels to a remote island in search of his missing sister after being kidnapped by a local religious cult, available on Netflix.
