There is something about cults and sects that always causes morbidity, either because you know how to get there, or simply because of the terrifying acts that are committed within. Now, let’s look at some of the stories that have to do with the occult, witchcraft or rituals that have transcended and become a thriller movie or series on this interesting subject.

the secret order

It probably has some of the scariest and most disturbing images on the list, and that is “the secret order’ It’s a suspense series with two seasons that tell the story of Jack Morton, a college student who after his mother’s death wants revenge and joins a sect that finds itself in the middle of a war between werewolves and wizards. Available on Netflix.

True detective

What at first appears to be a rather strange case of murdering a girl is soon discovered to be involved in an older and more bizarre corruption. The first season of ‘True detective’ is one of the best suspense series about cults, as the story with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson follows two investigators in a disturbing case that took years to solve. Available on HBO Max.

Eyes wide open

What they say was the job that cost director Stanley Kubrick his life ‘Eyes wide open’, a thriller about a strange sect, which is said to operate in Hollywood. Played by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, the story follows a doctor who is invited to an exclusive party on the outskirts of town, which he attends and turns out to be something darker. Available on HBO Max.

Under the banner of heaven

The most recent production starring Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar Jones is in this suspenseful miniseries entitled “Under the Banner of Heaven”. The story is based on Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction book, which investigated what was happening within the Mormon Church, where the 1984 murder case of Brenda Lafferty and her daughter took place. mid summer

On the more horror side, Robert Eggers, along with Florence Pugh, concoct the story of “Midsommar”, a film about a colorful cult hiding behind a summer festival, which attracts a group of friends. Once they join the community, the comrades discover the atrocities that are being committed, justifying their traditions. Available on Netflix.

The Apostle

Finally, “The Apostle” tells the story of Thomas Richardson, a man who travels to a remote island to save his sister, who has been kidnapped by a sect to perform terrible religious cults in her name. While trying to get the girl out, Thomas discovers the horrific deeds happening inside. Available on Netflix.
