Horror movies serve different purposes with their stories, from making you shiver with ghost or supernatural plots, to giving you tremendous stomach pain with their brutal imagery. But there is another type of fear, more primitive, which goes back to one of the oldest and strongest feelings of humanity, the fear of the unknown. And these horror movies will only scare you of your existence in the universe.
The empty man
there are many out there horror movies inspired by cosmic horror by HP Lovecraft, one who showed divinities beyond human understanding and that problems on Earth didn’t matter to them, as if they were ants in the cosmos. One of the best recent examples of him is in ‘The Empty Man’, the story of a policeman who, after the violent death of his family, investigates the disappearance of his friend’s daughter, which involves him in a strange sect. The Ritual
Recently the story of ‘The Ritual’ one of the best modern horror movies, and about a group of friends starting a hike to pay homage to one of their comrades who died tragically. But as they head into the Swedish forest, they discover that a creature has noticed their presence. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
The haze
Probably one of the most famous on the list, as it is based on an original story by Stephen King, is “The haze’, a horror movie that will give you a cosmic fear. Inhabitants of a small town are hiding in a supermarket after a thick fog has brought strange monsters from another dimension due to government experiments. Available on HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video.
It follows
Recognized as one of the best modern horror films, “It Follows” is a story directed by David Robert Mitchell, which tells of a curse that haunts Jay, an 18-year-old girl, who in her first relationship with her boyfriend, happens to a demon that you can only get rid of if you have sex with another person. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
Annihilation
Along the same lines, Alex Garland’s story, starring Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac and Tessa Thompson, in “Annihilation” is one of the best cosmic horror films. In it, a group of scientists is tasked with finding a squad of soldiers who could not return from an area known as The Shining, where the laws of physics are totally different. Available on Netflix.
The void
Finally, the horror film by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie, “The Void”. In this story, one night a sheriff runs into a seriously injured man, whom he decides to take to the hospital as soon as possible. On the spot, doctors and patients receive the strange visit of some hooded people who claim that a powerful creature is about to arrive.
