Mel Gibson reveals that Sean Connery is part of the reason he turned down the role of James Bond

Here is an interesting “what if” scenario regarding the James Bond franchising. Mel Gibson was offered the role of 007 about 40 years ago, but ultimately turned down the opportunity. In a recent interview JoBlothe director talked about this experience and reveals that part of the reason he didn’t want to do it was because of Sean Connery:

“They offered me James Bond movies when I was twenty-six, which is like forty years ago, okay? And they said, hey, we want you to be the next James Bond. And I thought about it; I was in Australia, I was working with Peter Weir. And I thought about it, and in a way I refused, for that reason. Because I thought, look what happened to poor Sean [Connery]it has been stuck there for three decades.

It is not difficult to imagine a young Mel Gibson in the role of James Bond. It would have been a really cool choice and I think it would have been great! But, in the end, the boy had an incredible career in the world of cinema and was part of a lot of great films.

He certainly doesn’t seem to regret turning down James Bond. What do you think of Mel Gibson as James Bond? Yes or no?
