First of all, whenever Hollywood makes a movie that is said to be based on a true story, how many times does that movie actually tell the true story? It is incredibly rare! Changes are almost always made to the story to make it more interesting for the audience. Hollywood doesn’t exist to give us history lessons, it exists to entertain the public.
The woman king it is a film that was made to entertain audiences and was inspired by real events, but it does not give us an accurate representation of the history of the events on which it was based.
Viola Davis plays General Nanisca in the film, the tough leader of the Agojie, the all-female warriors who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the early 1800s. Throughout the story, they fight to free themselves from the overbearing Oyo Empire and repel the emerging trafficking. of slaves.
The film was criticized on social media for its portrayal of some historical characters and events, most notably Dahomey’s role in commerce quite deeply. In the film, Nanisca challenges John BoyegaKing Ghezo, who became incredibly rich thanks to his role in the slave trade.
A lot of criticism seems to focus on how the film doesn’t address the Dahomey kingdom’s involvement in slavery and glosses over the fact that King Ghezo didn’t stop exporting people until 1852. For this reason #BoycottWomanKing became a thing.
In a recent interview with Variety, Davis defended the “fictional” they came up with for the film by saying, “You’re not going to win an argument on Twitter. We entered the story where the kingdom was ever-changing, at a crossroads. They were looking for an argument. way to keep their civilization and their kingdom alive. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that they were decimated. Most of the story is fictional. It has to be. “
Producer Julius Tennon, Davis’ husband, added: “Now we’re what we call ‘educational entertainment.’ It’s history but we have to take the license. We have to entertain people. It could have, it would be a documentary. Unfortunately, people wouldn’t be around. cinema doing the same things we saw this weekend. We didn’t want to shy away from the truth. The story is huge and there are truths about it that are there. If people want to know more, they can investigate more. “
When a movie is liked The woman king it is done, the hope is that people will go out and learn the real events for themselves. I always do this with this kind of historical films and films based on true stories!
One of my all time favorite movies is Brave Heart, and while that movie is based on a true story, there’s so much in the movie that it’s not true to William Wallace’s true story. He’s so wrong, but the movie is so damn good! Taking the creative license is something Hollywood has always done when making this type of film.
You have seen The woman king still? If so what do you think !?
