GKIDS recently acquired the North American theatrical distribution rights to an upcoming adult animated film titled Unicorn Wars. This film is described as “Bambi meets Apocalypse now”And this is enough information to make me want to watch it!
The film comes from the director Alberto Vázquezand here is the synopsis:
“The film is a provocative and eerily beautiful horror comedy, which uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious fanaticism, the tortured legacies of military fascism and the depths of the soul. For centuries, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive and confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive and reserved brother Tubby couldn’t be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of the teddy bear training camp morph into the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will determine the fate of the entire war.
GKIDS President David Jesteadt stated in a statement: “There is no one on Earth who could make such a film Unicorn Wars except Alberto Vázquez. We are proud to partner with this outstanding director again in his richly layered and darkly entertaining new film about cute characters doing horrible things. He continues to haunt me. “
The film is expected to premiere in the United States at the upcoming Fantastic Fest, followed by its national release in early 2023.
