At the beginning of the development of the original Constantine film, Warner Bros. would take the film in a different direction with the star of the film. At a certain point, Nicolas Cage was assigned to play John Constantine, not Keanu Reeves.
Cage was tied to the project when he was a director Tarsem Singh he was developing the film for the studio. Director Francesco Lorenzo explained in an interview with Discussing Film:
“Actually, Keanu was already active before me. So this was a case where he had been in development for a while, I think there was another director before me as well. I think Tarsem [Singh] at some point I would have done it before me with Nicolas Cage or something and then it fell apart. Then they asked Keanu to play it. “
It’s not hard to imagine Cage playing Constantine, in fact, I think it would have been great. But I definitely wouldn’t trade it for Keanu. Keanu was really great in the role, and it’s super exciting to see him play the character again after all these years!
The sequel was announced last week and fans are insanely excited about what this sequel will offer!
