The creators of COBRA KAI discuss the end of season 5, the global future of The Story and their spinoff FERRIS BUELLER

The creators of Cobra Kai – Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz And Hayden Schlossberg – have created such a rich and fun world within the Karate Kid universe, bringing back tons of characters from the movies and weaving together this incredibly interesting and cohesive world. This fifth season was no different, and it seemed like many of the characters were breaking new ground in their development and stories, with the background of karate being pushed to the limit once again.

Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg recently met with Variety to talk about the end of the season and what’s to come next, as well as their upcoming Ferris Bueller spin-off that is in the works.

But before we move on, this interview is full of spoilers, so if you haven’t finished season 5 yet, here’s your warning not to read ahead.

When asked about the International Karate Tournament we learned about the season called Sekai Taikai, Schlossberg said:

We grew up loving the “Rocky” movies. There’s that original “Rocky” and then there’s Mr. T in “Rocky III”. Once you reach that madness, how do you get over it? Well, you get Russia and America and Dragon. All these guys are gaining skills in karate power, so you need to create a new obstacle for them to tackle. It looked like it was in the real world, that’s what would happen. If you are the best in karate, what will you do? Maybe there is something beyond your area.

Hurwitz said of the next story:

We have more stories to tell; we are still trying to figure out the details of this. We are shooting another series that we have created and we are broadcasting called “Obliterated” for Netflix, which is another of our passion projects. The three of us have been friends since we were teenagers. When we do a show, we live together because it’s just easier to keep working at night. After a long day of filming “Obliterated”, the talk very often shifts to “Cobra Kai”. There is a lot in store, a lot of thoughts for the future. There is a lot we want to do with these characters and we are stunned for the next step.

Asked if the newly escaped Kreese will be the main antagonist of the sixth season, Schlossberg said:

We liked the idea that for many characters it felt like, “We made it. It’s over. Cobra Kai is done. Meanwhile, there’s the latest Cobra Kai snake out there that’s really pissed off at everyone right now. “We’ll see if life goes easy in Season 6, or if Kreese has something to say. Something tells me it’s going to be the second.”

Asked about the trio’s next spin-off series based on the film Ferris Bueller’s day offHurwitz explained:

We are children of the 80s. When we talk about the seminal cinematic experiences of our lives, there is a five-year period from 83 to 88, in which a lot of those films fall for us. “Ferris Bueller” was such a moment in our life. We love side trips. In “Ferris Bueller”, there is this great desire that comes true with these two waiters, who bring this fantastic Ferrari to the maximum of fun. We only have a couple of glimpses of them leaving, climbing a giant hill, taking the car flying and then returning it. What’s going on in their lives? They seem to have a very different experience from Ferris, who lives on the outskirts. What could have led them to need that car, want that car and get it? When you start to unravel all the threads, many ideas are born. We are thrilled to tell a very different story that takes place in Chicago that day that is not trying to reconstruct “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. He’s just trying to add to it; we are not trying to put nostalgia in anyone’s throat. We love and respect movies that everyone talks about untouchables, and this isn’t trying to touch or mess with “Ferris Bueller” in any way.

Held added:

We are not interested in redoing something. We like it so much, we want to explore it more. The resemblance to “Cobra Kai” started with a point of view you didn’t see. In “Karate Kid”, what if I were in Johnny’s shoes? It makes you look back on “The Karate Kid” in a fun and different way. It keeps that movie alive in a different way. If things worked out with this, it would be similar.

When asked if familiar faces or songs might appear in the original 1986 film, Hurwitz replied:

We don’t want to spoil everything that will happen, but needless to say, it will take place on the same day as Ferris’ day off. They are in Chicago, they crossed their paths on their journey. Some of the iconic sets or locations that we have seen through Ferris’ eyes, perhaps we will see them through the eyes of other characters.

Can’t wait to see where Cobra Kai goes next season and I can’t wait to see how this team will play with the Ferris Bueller history and universe. Cobra Kai Seasons 1-5 are now available to watch on Netflix.
