The adaptation of “The Sandman” on Netflix came in the midst of a legal mess with some of the original characters from Neil Gaiman’s work and DC Comics rights issues. The second season, although not confirmed, could leave out one of the most tragic stories of the original comic.
It should be clarified that the second season of ‘The man of sand’ has not been confirmed by Netflix, and it remains a mystery whether at some point they will announce its continuation. Even when Neil Gaiman himself acknowledged the film’s success, they weren’t enough in terms of numbers for the streaming platform.
In any case, it is known that, for the first season, the series had to omit and modify some arcs and characters, such as that of Johana Constantine, Martian Manhunter, the Joker, Johnny Dee, among others. But for the second season of ‘The man of sand’ there is such a tragic story that it may not be adapted.
This is a story published in October 1990, in issue 20 of ‘The man of sand’, the tragedy of Element Girl. One of the most devastating, tragic and dark story arcs that Neil Gaiman went through when he wrote his graphic novel, and for which he was criticized and loved at the same time.
Element Girl in “The Sandman”
Urania “Rainie” Blackwell, or better known by her superhero name, Element Girl, is a girl with the superpower of immortality. One day, this girl receives a visit from Death, Morpheus’s sister, and one of the Eternals; once in confidence, Blackwell tells Death that she wants to lose her life and that she helps him.
Since this girl’s powers prevent Death from doing her job, the Eternal only has one advice for Element Girl, pray to Ra, the same god who gave her the power of immortality, to take it away from her. She immediately proceeds to do as he was told and, looking at the sun, he finally finds the greatest desire of her.
Not just for having one of the characters from the DC Universe, but for being one of the most tragic moments in which Morpheus and the Eternals have intervened with the course of humanity, is that this arc could be completely eliminated from the second season of ‘The Sandman. ‘on Netflix.
