Love of America Giulia Roberts is returning to its proper place in the romantic comedy genre with its upcoming film Ticket to heavenin which he will act opposite George Clooney. Twenty years ago, she was known as the queen of romantic comedies after starring in films such as Pretty Woman, My best friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, Bride on the runAnd Fall in love with America. But it’s been so long since she’s taken on a role in a romantic comedy, and she says it’s simply because there weren’t any such movies that were worth his time.
In a recent interview with Variety, talking about her next film, Roberts talked about how romantic comedy is an underrated genre and how in its day we didn’t appreciate the great films we were getting:
“I think we didn’t appreciate the bumper crop of romantic comedies we had back then. You don’t see all the effort and strings of the puppets because it’s funny and sweet and people laugh, kiss and are mischievous. This is a genre that I love to participate in and watch, and I think it’s difficult to interpret. There is really simple math, but how do you make it special? How do you keep people interested when you can somehow predict what’s coming?
She then talked about why she’s been away from this kind of story over the years, explaining:
“People sometimes misunderstand the amount of time that has passed since I didn’t do a romantic comedy because I didn’t want to do one. If I had read anything that I thought was that level of “Notting Hill” writing or the crazy fun level “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, I would. They didn’t exist until this movie [‘Ticket to Paradise’]. “
When asked if she had stayed away from romantic comedies for 20 years because “there wasn’t a good script, not even one,” Roberts replied, “Yes.”
So it looks like this is going to be a really fun throwback to the kinds of movies that actors like Roberts, Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Drew Barrymore did. I can not wait! Ticket to heaven comes out in theaters on October 21st.
