Director Giorgio Miller he’s been working hard this year on a couple of films he’s had in the works. Three thousand years of nostalgia was released this week and is currently filming his own Crazy Max prequel, Furious. In a recent interview with AV Club, Miller talked about his two most recent projects, and was asked about the risks and opportunities of telling a prequel story, as the ending is already known. Miller explained:
Well, that’s really interesting because it’s the core of the process. When we wrote Crazy Max, the task was to tell a story that was always on the run and see what the audience could catch glimpses of. That was one of the tricks of Mad Max: Fury Road, that there would be references to things where he came from, why they are doing things, but he was always on the run. There were very few quiet moments. We never explained how she lost her arm. We never explain what the current Green Place Of Many Mothers was. We have never explained how the Citadel works. So we had the practically complete script before shooting Road of Fury, and we did it because it was born from wanting to explain to everyone who Furiosa was, to Charlize when she took on the role, to all the actors, designers and everyone else who worked at the Citadel and so on. The feeling was, man, this is a pretty good script, and then I kept saying to myself, “if Road of Fury it works, I’d really like to tell this story ”.
So it was born, I don’t say it by chance, but it was born from a need to explain [Fury Road’s] world which, as I said, essentially happened in three days and two nights. She is really trying to explain how that world came about. We also wrote, not a screenplay, but almost in novel form, Nico Lathouris and I, what happened to Max that year before, and that’s something we’ll see later on. But in telling the story of Furiosa, everything inside Road of Fury it had to be explained. In my mind, I have a backstory of the Doof Warrior playing guitar. How can a blind man who all he can do is play a guitar, like he can survive in a wasteland where everyone is in extremis? How did it come to be there? So we wrote little stories for each character when we made it Road of Fury.
It seems that Miller enjoyed delving into the depths of this story. He has created such a rich world within the Mad Max lore, and I know that’s what will bring fans back to the cinema to see how this story turns out. Furious will be released in theaters on May 24, 2024. Are you excited to see this film?
