Last week we received the disappointing news that Warner Bros. has canceled the highly anticipated DC series Batman: Hooded Crusader. The series was developed for HBO Max by Bruce Tim, JJ AbramsAnd Matt Reeves and acclaimed comic book writer Ed Brubaker he was writing it.
Well, today I have some hopeful news for you! Batman: Hooded Crusader is receiving interest from several streaming services and there is a good chance the show really lives! The project is currently being purchased by Warner Bros. Animation and Apple, Hulu and Netflix all have an “intense interest” in the series!
The news comes from THR, who states: “It is not a question of quality, but an economic and strategic question. It is believed that the various divisions of Warner that make the show and the films will earn more from the titles by selling them to other outlets than having them on the Warner streamer. “
Some of the other projects canceled at purchase include Merry Little Batman, The Day Earth Exploded: A Looney Toons Movie, Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Toons Musical, I Did It For The Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, And The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.
But it is Batman: Hooded Crusader it’s getting the most interest, which is nice to hear. If this is indeed the case, getting picked up shouldn’t be a problem.
Timm talked about the show by sharing that it is “more Batman: the animated series from Batman: the animated seriesThe show will capture what Timm was originally trying to do with the original animated series, saying, “It kind of goes back to the original principles of the show that we originally invented in the early 1990s. There were some limitations on what we could do in the show. terms of adult content; in terms of violence and adult themes. ” He went on to say, “My idea is basically to say, ‘OK, it’s 1990 again, I can do what I want to do this time, and I have JJ and Matt backing me up.”
Abrams said so Batman: Hooded Crusader“It’s really an incredibly complex psychological story about someone who, in a sense, needs to be redeemed, and that’s what this first season is about at least.”
Brubaker said, “Their take on the show, with a slightly more pulpy take on the character and a new way of looking at the world of Gotham, set in the past but seen through a modern lens has really sold me, and so far every part of it. it was a blast to work on. The show would focus on a version of Batman who is completely alone on his journey. Reeves explained: “The Justice League doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist. There are no other superheroes. It’s Batman. You’re watching this lone figure swimming through Gotham’s cesspool. It’s Batman, alone.”
It has also been explained that Batman won’t have all of his gadgets as the show takes place before he starts investing money in that stuff. “So initially it’s going to be very low-tech. You know, as he develops as a character, we’re going to start presenting those gadgets and the audience will be able to see how he developed the Batmobile using different prototypes. That’s part of the fun of this series is that we’re finding it. discovering these things that, [in] most of the other Batman series were already there. “
