Neil Gaiman admits sabotaging Jon Peters’ SANDMAN movie by leaking his terrible script

Author and writer Neil Gaimanis the comic series The man of sand was finally adapted and premiered as a Netflix series just a few weeks ago. But this wasn’t the first time someone had tried to turn comics into a screen project. In the 90’s, Wild wild west And A star was born producer Jon Peters sent Gaiman a script for a Sandman movie, and the author told Rolling Stone: “It was the worst script I’ve ever read by anyone.” He explained:

“A guy in Jon Peters’ office called me and said, ‘So Neil, did you get a chance to read the script we sent you?’ And I said, ‘Well, yeah. Yes I did. I haven’t read it all, but I’ve read enough.’ He says, ‘So, pretty good. Huh?’ And I said, ‘Well, no. It really isn’t.’ He said, ‘Oh, come on. There must have been things in there that you loved. ”I said,’ There was nothing in there that I loved. There was nothing in there that I liked. It was the worst script I ever had. Never read by anyone. It’s not just the worst Sandman script. That was the worst script ever sent to me. ‘”

Gaiman added:

“I’m not sure if it would have been an action movie or what it would have been. It was a mess. It has never been better than a mess. “

Describing in detail the “really stupid” ideas in Peters’ script, Gaiman explained:

“It contained giant mechanical spiders … Lucifer, Morpheus, and the Corinthian were identical triplets. They were a family of identical brothers, and it was all a race to see who could get the ruby, helmet and sandbag before midnight 1999, before the turn of the new millennium, because whoever gets it would be was the winner. That was the plot. “

To kill the film before it moved further, Gaiman says he anonymously leaked the script to the press.

“I sent the script to Ain’t It Cool News, which was being read by people at the time. And I thought, I wonder what Ain’t It Cool News will think of the script they will receive anonymously. And they wrote a fabulous article about what it was like the worst script ever sent to them. And suddenly the prospect of that movie happening vanished. And instead Jon Peters turned his attention to “Wild Wild West”. “

It seems he made the right decision. You can’t just accept any bad script you read and let someone execute your beloved story. Gaiman allowed Netflix to make his story of him the way he had imagined it and The man of sand is firmly at the top of Netflix’s global top 10 list for three consecutive weeks and awaits a possible season two renewal.

Are you having fun The man of sand series? Are you hoping it will be renewed for a second season?
