Have you ever heard of the NBA comedy All-Star Weekend which was shot six years ago and features a crazy cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Jeremy Piven, Robert Downey Junior., Eva Longoria, Gerard ButlerAnd Benicio Del Toro? Of course not, because you’d remember a movie with that kind of star power, and because it’s been shelved in recent years. Filmed in 2016, the comedy was to be released during the 2018 NBA All-Star Game period and again in the following season. But still, we’ve never heard of it.
Fortunately, the star of the film, comedian and Oscar winner, Jamie Foxx he sat down with Cinema Blend and talked about the film, and why he thinks it remained unreleased, saying:
“Man, it’s been tough, with the conformation of the country when it comes to comedy, man. We are trying to break through those sensitive corners where people laugh again. And that’s why I think, even in this film, the great thing is (that) the only thing we kept hearing in the screenings was how much people laughed. So, hopefully to make them laugh and make them participate in the All-Star Weekend, because we were definitely going there. “
Foxx delved into one of the aspects that push the boundaries of the film when he appeared as a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2017. He revealed that he convinced Robert Downey Jr. to play a Mexican character. In his explanation of him, he referred to Downey wearing blackface makeup tropical thunder, a role that earned him an Oscar nomination. In the podcast, Foxx explained:
“We all play different characters. I play a racist white cop. I’ll show you. I take the thing and show it to you. Robert Downey Jr. plays a Mexican. I called Robert and said, “Listen, I need you to play a Mexican.” He said, ‘Dude, here’s the deal. Safe. Fuck yourself. Safe. Why not? Fuck yourself. Safe. Of course. Mexican. Whatever.'”
Will we ever see this movie? There is a possibility that a streaming service could take a risk, as the cast is so solid. I know they would get people to watch it. But depending on how offensive the story and dialogue really gets, I suppose this will be the last deciding factor. I would look at it just to see what it is! Would you take a look at it?
