Movies and series about humanity’s most devastating global catastrophes – Amazon Prime Video (courtesy)
Natural disaster cinema has become a very effective trend for several Hollywood production companies, however, what we will see in the following list are real world catastrophe movies about different events that have defined the history of mankind.
Chernobyl
One of the most catastrophic events in the history of modern humanity was the nuclear disaster of the Pripyat plant in Ukraine. Precisely “Chernobyl” is a historical drama series about what happened in that month of April 1986 and people’s efforts to save what they could on that tragic day for humanity. Available on HBO Max.
The tomb of the fireflies
The invention of atomic weapons and weapons of mass destruction was a before and after for the history of mankind, and of all the films dealing with the horrors of World War II, “The Tomb of the Fireflies” is one of the more devastating. It is an animated film about two brothers who lose their home and mother and must survive the devastation of a bomb.
World Trade Center
The famous September 11, 2001 inspired countless films and series about what happened on that tragic day for the United States. But one of the most exciting stories of such an extraordinary event is “World Trade Center” with Nicolas Cage, who talks about the attack on the Twin Towers in New York. Available on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Apple TV.
The impossible
Juan Antonio Bayona’s drama is one of the most shocking, especially when you know it really happened. ‘The Impossible’ is a true-to-life film about a Spanish family who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami while on vacation in Thailand. Available on Netflix, HBO Max, StarzPlay and Amazon Prime Video.
Schindler’s List
Like “Tomb of the Fireflies”, Steven Spielberg’s story with Liam Neeson in “Schindler’s List” is based on real events that occurred during World War II, one of the key events in modern human history. Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max.
City of God
We finally step away from American history with “City of God”, a Brazilian drama based on a true story. The story describes one of the modern evils that afflicts not only a country, but the whole of humanity, the world of organized crime, especially the violence it leaves in its wake in Rio de Janeiro.
