Wolfgang Petersen, director of ‘Troy’ and ‘The Neverending Story’, has died aged 81

German director Wolfgang Petersen has died at the age of 81, as confirmed by Variety. The death occurred last Friday, although it wasn’t until this Tuesday when the news was confirmed. The director died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Brentwood (California), in the arms of his wife Maria-Antoinette Borgel.

Petersen has made many films, among which the popular German production “The Submarine” in 1981 stands out. The film tells the adventures of a German submarine during the Second World War. Starring Jürgen Prochnow, the film garnered up to six Oscar nominations, making it the foreign-language film with the most nominations in history at the time. Petersen was nominated for the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director.

After the success of “The Submarine”, Hollywood opened its doors to Petersen. Once there, the director has directed several blockbusters such as ‘Air Force One (The President’s Plane)’, ‘The Perfect Storm’, ‘Outbreak’, ‘Troy’ or ‘In the Line of Fire’. Interestingly, in 1984, also premiered “The Neverending Story”, thus fulfilling his dream of adapting Michael Ende’s novel. After several years without major works after the failure of “Poseidon” in 2006, Petersen said goodbye to cinema in 2016 by recording “Four Against the Bank” in his native Germany.

The protagonist of ‘The perfect storm’, on the other hand, Diana Lane also wanted to pay homage to the one who was the director. Through a statement for Deadline, the actress stated the following: “my heart is sad today. Wolfgang was a great and caring soul. A natural leader who pushed you forward through positive encouragement; I dare say that he has been a spiritual guide for us. Literally just being close to him made me a better actress. My sincere condolences and affection for her family.”.
