A trailer has been released for a new documentary film titled Let’s go back to the Drive-In, which explores the love of drive-in theaters and the struggles they face. I’m sure you know there was a wave of cinema attendance during the pandemic when the rest of the cinemas closed and people seemed to love it! But now that theaters are open and thriving again, participation in drive-in cinemas has declined. That’s what this documentary is about.
Here is the synopsis:
When the pandemic hit, drive-ins were suddenly the only safe place in town, with press coverage of how drive-ins have “come back” and how they are thriving. But this documentary goes behind the headlines to uncover the truth, spending an entire night with 11 very different drive-ins in 8 states across the country, from pre-arrival preparations, to ticket sales, to opening of the snack bar and to the film on the screen, we find that these family businesses are indeed struggling to survive. This paper talks about authentic drive-ins and the resilience of the passionate people who run them, but more generally it highlights the questions about the future of the theatrical experience and the challenges of many small businesses wondering if they will survive and make it through. get to the other side of the pandemic.
The film is from the director April Wright (Current Attractions: The Definitive History of the American Drive-In Movie And Current attractions: the definitive history of the Palace cinema), and it looks like an interesting movie. I love drive-in cinemas! There just aren’t any around where I live. I would go much more if there was!
Let’s go back to the Drive-In will be released in some American theaters starting August 12, 2022.
